I know there are a number of athletes who have experienced IT band problems. This painful injury can slow the training progress, and in severe cases, prevent you from running or cycling at all.

The typical protocol for caring for a problematic IT band is icing, stretching, massage (or self-myofacial release on a foam roller), and, in some cases, rest. Aqua jogging may replace running to maintain fitness.

If you've experienced IT band syndrome, what has worked for you? Can you offer any words of wisdom to those suffering with IT band syndrome right now?

One the biggest causes of IT band syndrome is a weak core.  Especially glutes, hip flexors muscles and hips.  With weak core muscles, the glutes muscles are not firing properly and the TFL hip muscle becomes overused and then the pain radiates down the IT band into an athlete's knee.  This is experienced most commonly due to instability of the core during  the discipline of running.

The second most common reason for IT issues I see is improper bike fit.  Many times the saddle is at the wrong height and the glutes, again, do not fire properly.  The TFL will become overused and IT issues begin.

If starting to experience IT band issues, many athletes can fix the problem before long term pain with the proper strengthing exercises.  Also, consider  a proper bike fit by an experienced practioner.   If this is ongoing, then you will want to consult a PT to see what is the best course of action.

Good Luck,
